in the morning and amazing

We are going from this: to: and with PSPX, but I'm sure it's backwards compatible (as well as with PS)

First we'll start of with our base image, from IHJ Media.

Crop it as desired, but don't resize it yet.

First thing I do once cropping an image, if it's a movie cap, is run the Digital Camera Noise Removal. This depends greatly on he quality of your image, but here's my settings for this image.

Next is curves. I'm not going to go into great detail with this, since once again it depends on your image, and there are a couple great curves tutorials out there already.

First, let's brighten up the image. I adjusted the RGB channel with these settings.

Next we want to remedy the heavy blue tint of the image - we do this by adding some red and taking out some blue. I'll link you to what my three other curves parts look like:

Blue - I dropped the amounts severly.
Red - Added only a little for this icon - taking out the blue did well enough for my tastes.
Green - The finished icon has a bit of a green tint, and I did that by adding some green back here.

Now we are finally ready to resize and sharpen.

Resize your icon to 100x100 and flatten it. When I sharpen, I duplicate the layer, then choose 'Sharpen More'. I then use the opacity slider to find the perfect amount of sharpness. I used 36%, but once again, it all depends on your image. Flatten layers.

So far I have this:

Now the hard stuff is over - it's pretty easy now. This is what my layers looked like:

And for what feels like the billionth time - it all depends on your image. You may have to increase the opacity of the screen layer, of lower the opacity of the second softlight layer. Different colors of multiply and exclusion can help too.

If you need help with anything, feel free to ask. If I wasn't clear or you arn't sure how to do something, I'll be happy to help as best I can.

...beautiful movie
...beautiful picture
...beautiful icons

I really enjoyed this tut. I have PS7 and don't know that I'll be able to translate it, but I'll try.

I hope you are able to translate it - the only thing I don't know if you would be able to do in Photoshop is the digital camera noise removal. If you know of any option in PS such as despeckle or noisse removal that does something like that, it would work. That steps not really nessacary I suppose, but I find it helps a ton when you have grainy movie caps. It also eliminates the need for skin smoothing sometimes.

Whew! Seems like a lot of work, but the icon is looking good. I remember seeing this film at the theatres and thinking it was amazing. It's been one of my faves since.

Once you get in the rhythm of it, it moves along rather quickly. I found it helps to assign shortcuts to the digital noise removal and curves so it moves even quicker!

*Snicker* This seems oddly familiar :p I love it though!! You're such a doll. Your tut was a breeze and I'm thoroughly loving it and you!! <3

whats this effect called?
7th-Mar-2006 11:52 pm (UTC)
Um, I don't suppose there's an actual name for the effect. The blue exclusion-tan multiply-light blue burn + curves effect?

What is that font you use on the right side of the layer palette in the screencap up there? (Wow, that was a long sentence.)

Just curious, because I haven't been able to find it anywhere.

*****First, let's brighten up the image. I adjusted the RGB channel with these settings.*****

What are the setting's? You did not post the settings to lighten the image up. You only posted the Red, Blue and Green, using the already lightened image.

Do you remember what setting's you used to lighten the image up?
29th-Oct-2007 10:05 am (UTC) - Re: RGB channel
I used to have an image there I believe, with the settings. I must have removed the image from the my photobucket, sorry. I don't remember for sure, as I wrote this tutorial quite a while ago, but it was probably no more than creating a point near the center of the line and dragging it up and left a little bit.
